Here is a vid I made of myself practicing. I still have a long way to go but I thought I'd share =0) Sorry about the dim lighting I need to fix that.

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”

You point, I punch.
Hey Chev,

You might not like the music, but watch this drummer. I have no idea how he plays that fast and makes it look so effortless.

Open in a new window and watch in 720p fullscreen. Wow!

The first duty of a tank is not to stay alive, but to keep their party alive and buy them time to bring down the quarry. Staying alive is merely a habit in keeping with that primary goal.
Yeah that's pretty fast. Aside from having the talent you have to practice that sort of play all of the time. I'm trying to get fast but my left hand holds me back. Even though I did play about 18 years ago fro 2 years I never "finished" honing my skills... like finishing a dish you're cooking.

So right now I have this modest amount of coordination but my age and lack of practice for 18 years is holding me back. I'm working on it though! I'm already playing allot lighter and now putting less stress on my hands (lighter grip). To play fast like this you have to use a light grip and the "flick" of your wrist or even just your fingers using really light sticks.

Here is one of my favorite newer drummers. Notice in the middle of this video he stops and warms up his fingers, playing very fast without even gripping the sticks with a whole hand. He's also using a very light stick.

I personally grew up with the whole 80's metal, big stick swings, exaggerated movements (Tommy Lee?). I never learned to play fast, never took band in school so I never got my left hand in good shape and never learned all of the rudiments on the snare. I eventually learned some of then but didn't put in that kind of marching bad practice that you need.

Everyday I play though I work on it and focus on my left foot and left hand a good bit. Strangely my left foot is pretty fast and coordinated. I can play some song completely left footed if they are slow enough. I feel like I'm really close to a break though but i think my age is getting in the way a little. I don't heal in a day like I used to.

That guy Chad is the drummer for Breaking Benjamin. We saw them recently and I watched him warm up while the previews band was still playing. He came out and stood behind the stage and actually started beating on the corner of the stage with his sticks at that super fast speed.

If you're good enough though and play professionally is all comes to you anyway. My fav drummer is Morgan Rose

He doesn't normally play speed metal, but I know for a fact he's super fast when he wants to be, especially with his feet. Yet he plays with much heavier double butted sticks (I have a few pair). They're actually too heavy for me... for now =0)

And on that note you made me want to go play so off I go! =0)

Those guys are good but my top 3 still have to be Neil Pert (Rush), Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater).

Chevelle's right though, speed playing like that is really all about relaxing your wrists and a TON of practice. When you get to where you can play 32nd and 64th notes like 16th notes you're almost there. lol
